Gender Informed Health Care

Michigan Medical School

Problem

Medical school students need to practice interacting with patients to gather medical information and history as part of their studies. However, it is not possible for them to do all their practice with real patients.

Outcome/Impact

A virtual patient experience designed to help learners practice clinical interviewing in a safe, formative environment. Students engage with a simulated patient to gather a complete medical history while demonstrating gender-affirming and trauma-informed communication without making assumptions. The exercise emphasizes verbal communication and organization, guiding learners to conduct interviews aloud and deliver a full case presentation. It can be repeated multiple times to build confidence and refine skills before submission.
